Top racing tipster Kevan Minter, known as The Colonel, gives readers his top tips for the week ahead. Kevan, who lives in Stamford, is trackside most days and is regularly on television.

The St Leger Festival is the jewel in the crown of horseracing in Yorkshire and the showpiece of Doncaster’s social calendar. Racegoers enjoy a delightful blend of history, quality racing and live entertainment across the four-day racing extravaganza.

The crescendo builds to Saturday (Sept 14), when the illustrious Ladbrokes St Leger takes centre stage.

Excess Knowledge has been the best-backed horse this week with most of the firms for the season’s final classic ( 7/2 from 9/2 ). Leading Light has also attracted support with the bookie’s ( 4/1 from 5/1).

The Sussex Stakes winner Toronado will run next in the Queen Elizabeth ll Stakes at Ascot next month taking on his old sparing partner Dawn Approach. The bookies go 7/2 and 4/1 about Toronado with Olympic Glory the 11/4 favourite.

Lady Cecil’s Oasis filly Joyeuse was my highlight of last week, winning the listed race at Sailsbury. The two-year old looks a serious horse for next year and is top priced at 20/1 for the 2014 Guineas.

The Fugue ( 4/1 ) got the better of the warm favourite Al Kazeem by a lengh and a half in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The Irish-trained Gordon Lord Byron won the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday. The 7/2 shot was given a very confident ride by Johnny Murtagh to beat Slade Power with the 5/2 favourite Lethal Force unplaced.

Baccarat has been backed this week ( 10/1 from 12/1 ) for the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup on September 21.

Saturday’s impressive Haydock winner Top Notch Tonto is the 10/1 favourite with Bet365 for the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket at the end of September.

At Town Moor today in the Group 2 Doncaster Cup Ahzeemah is strongly fancied to take the stayer’s race.

Saeed Bin Suroor’s Lockwood is expected to take all the beating in the 3.15 OLBG Park Stakes (Group 1) at Doncaster on Saturday.
