NEW Zealander Andrew Nicholson took the Burghley Horse Trials 2012 title from Team GB’s William Fox-Pitt.

As usual thousands of people descended upon Stamford for the event and they were blessed in the main by good weather.

Sinead Haplin took second place and Fox-Pitt came in third. Fox-Pitt also won the FEI Classic Series.

There was even a royal visit by Olympic silver medallist Zara Phillips who judged the Land Rover Tailgate Picnic competition on Saturday.

The trials were not just about the top-class sporting action, as there was also fine food, lifestyle pavilions and more than 500 trade stands and shops.
