Last weekend saw more than 100 competitors, from both the Men’s and Ladies’ sections, contest the Brenda Capon Trophy, played in memory of one of Burghley’s Past Ladies’ Captains.

The event, played as a Stableford, has separate sections for men and women, with the best overall score from both sections taking the trophy.

Conditions were relatively benign, with the forecasted rain never arriving, much to the relief of the 83 men and 25 women who took part.

The outcome was tight. Dave Tilley topped the leaderboard for the men with 41 points, a score matched by Gail Hunt in the women’s section. However, because of differences in the standard scratch for the women’s and men’s tees, the men’s course is rated two shots more difficult, meaning that Dave Tilley was the overall winner of the Capon Trophy.

Tilley, playing off 10, went round the back 9 in level par gross, compiling a round which contained 10 pars and 2 birdies in his 41 points. He was cut to 8 as a result. The next two places went to Junior members, with countback being required to separate them.

Lewin Auciello continued his recent steady improvement to finish second on 39 points, with his round containing 7 pars and 4 birdies. He edged out Juniors Captain Dean Vaughan, also on 39, who shot a 2 over par gross, with 12 pars and 2 birdies. In all, seven men went under par.

Gail Hunt dominated in the ladies competition, coming in with 41 points and being cut yet again this season; she now plays off 26.

Gail was going steadily until a run of a birdie and 3 pars in the middle of the back nine ignited her round, coming in with an excellent 25 points for the inward half. Joan Hickman took second with 38 points, ahead of Debbie Richardson in third with 37.

l The Seniors travelled to Peterborough Milton on Monday, and came up against a side who are traditionally hard to beat.

The match was closely fought, but once again Milton edged ahead at the key moment, to come out 4½ - 3½ winners.

Results: Bob Collier & Pete Hickman won 3&2, Rowland Davies & Kelvin Tow lost 1 down, Alan Gray & Ian Roberts lost 6&4, Paul Sampy & Keith Duff lost 4&3, Chris Sheffield & Peter Symonds lost 2&1, Rod Wright & Mike Wright won 6&5, Brian Plowright & Bill Purchase halved, Donald MacMillan & Brendan Alston won 2&1.

l The Ladies’ have played two away matches in the past week, securing an impressive half at Oundle, and going down narrowly (2½ - 1½) at Elton Furze, where tight fairways and challenging roughs made accuracy off the tee essential .

Results (Oundle) - Chris Wright & Gill Webb lost 3&2, Lynn Collen & Lynda Lancaster won 5&4, Sue Churchill & Elaine Brown won 5&4, Pam Barton & Beryl Burrows lost 1 down.

(Elton Furze) – Chris Wright & Wendy Higgs lost 3&2, Gill Bedford & Sheila Mayman halved, Pippa Le Sage & Mo Hopkins won 4&3, Gail Hunt & Beryl Burrows lost 1 down.

l In the Ladies Trophy & Rabbit Cup, played on Tuesday, victory went to Sue Grindall on 36 points, edging out Barbara Newall (with the same score) on countback. Chris Redfern was third with 34 points.
