Titanic father and son tussle

RUTLAND County Golf Club is witnessing a titanic tussle between father and son golfers Deggie and Chris Palmer.

Deggie won the April Medal and in so doing realised a golfing ambition by becoming a category one player as a 5.1 handicapper. Not willing to be outshone, Chris shot a tenacious gross 69 to win the May midweek medal and achieve category 1 status himself at 4.8 and thus retain the upper hand over the old-stager.

Veteran Bob Ambrose is also playing the golf of his life and took second in the medal ahead of another sub-par round of gross 70 by Michael Pressick who continues to impress in third.

The B team had a 5 and 2 victory over rivals Greetham Valley who commented favourably on the lush conditions of both tees and greens.

Scores: Gerry McIntyre and Pete Siciliano won 1 up, Dave Aust and Ollie Huxley won 5 and 3, Chris Palmer and Bob Ambrose won 2 and 1, Mark Durno and Jordan Paylor lost 1 down, Dave Rippin and Phil Drury lost 4 and 2, Dave Waddell and Phil Jordan won 6 and 4, Cliff Knapp and Martyn Gatehouse won 4 and 3.

Pick of the first round matches in the Men’s singles knockout was Pete Siciliano’s 3 and 2 win against Andy Vernon.
