Greetham club captain Trevor Smith and Burghley Park’s Hannah Vaughan teamed up to win Greetham Valley’s Mixed Open on Sunday, six points clear of their nearest rivals.
The winning pair were well ahead of the other 43 couples, with players from almost 20 different clubs on Greetham’s Lakes Course.
A breeze which grew in strength during the day, kept the majority of the scores down in the mid-30s but Smith, off one, and Vaughan, off six, were unfazed.
Playing the betterball format with three quarters handicap, the pair carded seven pars and two birdies on the front nine for 22 points at the half way mark. Their scoring was even better on the back nine, with five pars and four birdies for a total of 46, six clear of runners-up ladies captain Sheila Douty, off 16, and 15-handicapper Bob Beverley.
Third place was settled on countback after three teams scored 39 points. The best score of the day from a visiting pair received a special prize, Mick McCreary and Kay Blacklock from Nene Park in Peterborough took it with forty two points.
l Ben Easson won the annual Chris Southwell Trophy at Greetham Valley, eclipsing long time leader Alan Bennett and Richard Wilson with a late, winning gross 73 (net 67) for a one shot victory.
Easson shot a bogie on the first hole and a double bogie on the second but recovered from this terrible start with a couple of birdies on the back nine as he closed in on the title.
Wilson pushed Bennett into third on countback. All three received handicap cuts. Jordan Burdall, playing off plus one, had the lowest gross of the day with 69.
l The Greetham Ladies scratch team, got off to a fine start in the defence of their Lincolnshire Ladies Scratch title, beating Belton Park in their first match of the year.
Team Captain Gilly Grant and county player Emma Tipping both enjoyed big wins while Liz Haughton, who has recently returned to golf after several years, narrowly lost 3&2 to a scratch player in a tough scratch team debut.
l Greetham’s Emma Tipping and Sophie Beardsall were part of the Lincolnshire Ladies team playing at County Week as Hawkstone Park in Shropshire.
The team played five days in a row with foursomes on the morning and singles rounds in the afternoon, beating Staffordshire 8-1, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire both 6½-2 ½; Shropshire 8-1, and Derbyshire 6½-2 ½ for a clean sweep.
The county finals will be held in Wilmslow, Cheshire in September when Lincolnshire will appear for the fifth consecutive year.
