Triumphant bowlers pick up a hat-trick on the road

Oakham Bowling Club picked up three victories on the road last week.

The Thursday team won 77-74 at Belgrave, winning on three of the four rinks of a game played in persistent drizzle. The winning skips were Alan Jones, Gail Robertson and Bob Hammond.

Results: Barrie Payne, Denis Smith, John Moore and Alan Jones won 22-16; David Thorne, Jack Pearce, Terry Thurman and Gail Robertson won 21-16; Roger Lancaster, Tony Flower, Bob Swarbrick and Bob Hammond won 20-17; Brian Garner, Rod Stanley, Norman Coville and Chris Wallis lost 14-25.

The Saturday side then narrowly beat Leicester’s Goodwood 83-76.

The match was very close with Oakham winning two rinks and drawing one in the four rink match.

Oakham’s winning skips were Bob Swarbrick and Alan Jones.

Results: Lyn Walters, Tony Flower, Peter Ferry and Bob Swarbrick won 23-17; Ray Wilkins, Derek Bury, Terry Thurman and Alan Jones won 23-18; Richard Ward, Mike Hardy, Eddie Owen and Denis Smith drew 18-18; Eileen Wright, Brian Garner, Barrie Payne and Chris Wallis lost 19-23.

Oakham’s mixed Sunday team won also won by seven shots, beating Whissendine 56-49 despite losing on two of the three rinks.

The victory was entirely due to an inspired performance by the rink skipped by Beryl Birch which won by an excellent 19 shots.

Results: David Morgan, Roger Rowlands and Beryl Birch won 35-16; Juliet Healey, Ray Wilkins and Ros Carter lost 11-13; Kath Rowlands, Rod Groombridge and Michael Timms lost 10-20.
