Unbeaten James and Dean win winter title

BURGHLEY Park Golf Club’s Winter Competition final saw James Grant and Dean Vaughan comfortably beat Paul Redfern and Paul York this week.

James and Dean were unbeaten throughout the round robin phase and formed a formidable partnership. The new season should see Dean quickly reduce his handicap of ten.

The Coronation Cup (marking the 1937 Coronation) saw Billy Earl, 88-24-64, beat fellow 18-handicap Mike Ferreira by one shot. Third was Mark Norman 83-17-66. The low handicap division was won by Richard Skillen, 75-7-68, also the lowest gross.

The April midweek Stableford was won by Dave Millichip with 38 points and a new handicap of 13. One point behind came Craig Matthews, John Moore, Simon Howard and George Tee.

The W H Jackson Trophy, a pairs Bogey event with the top 16 pairs qualifying for a further knockout competition for the Cottingham Salvers, was won by Graham Bedford and Mike Beaumont with an excellent plus nine. Ken Bates and son Joe were runners up on plus eight with another father and son combination, Terry and Bob Moss a further point behind with Tony Ahearne and Phil Murphy.

l THE first South Lincs League match of the season saw Burghley A beat Boston A 5–1. The result marks a good start to what promises to be a tough season with Blankney, Belton Park, Stoke Rochford and Spalding making up the first division.

The Burghley Seniors won 6-2 at Luffenham Heath in their opening match.

The Ladies opening competition saw a win in the April Medal for Susan Ferreira 95-18-77, on countback from Doris Sissins 98-21-77 and Shirley Caruth 102-25-77.

The April midweek medal went to Fiona Purves with a net 68 and a three shot handicap reduction. Val Jacobs was runner up.

l THERE will be a “taster” day for juniors on Thursday, April 21 with any U16s with an interest in taking up golf, boys or girls, invited to the Club at 3pm.
