Last weekend saw the conclusion of Round 1 of the Men’s Winter League at Burghley Park golf club, with some early shocks being administered.
But with another six rounds to play in the league stage, there is still plenty of opportunity for anyone to find form in time to qualify for the knockout phase.
Each of the four divisions contains eight teams, with the top two teams in each division making it to the knockout stage.
The best result of the round was secured by A team players Richard Vaughan and George Beadle, playing off 5 and scratch, who powered to a 5 and 4 victory over Simon Tee and Clive Knox, to lead League A on holes won.
Three other pairs also have the maximum three points in League A – Martin Ash and Stuart Blesset, Mike Barton and Chris Quinn, and Doug Hunter and David Shales.
League B is closely matched, as three of the four matches were halved – the only winners being Alex Cole and Dave Millichip, who overcame Andy Sandell and Bob Howe 2 and 1.
Cole and Millichip are two points clear at the top of League B, followed by a six-way tie for second place with one point.
League C saw three wins and a draw, with the biggest win going to brothers Jordan and Adam Mayman, both juniors, who secured a 3 and 2 victory over Paul Redfern and Paul York, who made it to the last eight of the competition last year.
The other winners in this league were Javan Argent and David Jackson, and Bob Emmins and Chris Bradshaw, making it three teams with maximum points in the division.
League D saw a shock defeat for last year’s winners of the competition, Paul Wilkinson and John Mayman, who went down 2 and 1 to Bill O’Driscoll and Terry Austin. Other winners were Paul Ramm and Richard Allen, and Rob Fisher and Gary Steadman, with the fourth match halved.
