Stamford golfer Pete Woolley was the only player to shoot a net sub-par when Rutland County Club’s April medal was contested in high winds last week.
The conditions – almost unplayable at times with the standard scratch going out to 74 - would have seen most professionals heading for the hills but Woolley ground out 82-12-70 to win Division 1, ahead of Roger Overton on net 73 and Pete Siciliano on 74.
Bob Haynes, who scored many half-centuries during his cricketing career at Uffington, shot 51 on the front nine but rallied with a battling 39 on the inward nine, despite a seven on the 10th, to shoot 90-15-75 for victory in Division 2 and the lowest gross.
Haynes, was delighted with the win, his first at County and said: “After the 10th, I couldn’t do anything wrong.”
Ian Rice came in second with 93-16-77 and Taff Magill followed him with 92-14-78.
