OAKHAM head into tomorrow’s match against Ibstock as one of the division’s form sides after inflicting the first defeat of the season on former leaders Loughborough Carillon last weekend.

The Lime Kilns side struggled early in the season but have found form in recent weeks, and moved up another place in the Everards Leicestershire League’s third division with Saturday’s victory.

Oakham batted first, making 220-9 with Steve Mendes in sensational form. He top-scored for Oakham with 79 before taking five Carillon wickets as Oakham turned the form book on its head and dismissed Carillon for 145.

Mendes finished with five for 28 off 11 overs as Oakham beat the leaders on their own ground by 75 runs.

Carrillion won the toss and put Oakham into bat, and Oakham made a slow start due to some excellent bowling by Carrillon’s opening bowlers.

Oakham started to gain momentum after captain Sean Cowley came in but it was Mendes who really put Oakham into a winning position smashing his 79 in 20 overs. James Booth joined him and the pair put on 50 in five overs as Oakham finished on 220 for 9.

Carrillon’s reply was immediately curtailed by a devastating opening spell by Mendes who took three wickets in the first five overs.

A run out reduced Carrillon to 14-4 and although they recovered to score 145 all out, Oakham always had the advantage. Mendes finished with figures of 5-28 from 11 overs with Rory Brown (2-28), Tom Lemon (1-21) and Shyam Lakhani (1-31) also among the wickets.

Skipper Cowley was delighted with the performance and a result which leaves Oakham with three wins from their last four matches.

He said: “It was a great team effort against a very good side. Every player chipped in but Steve did fantastically and really gave us momentum.

“It was a great feeling. Now we need four or five more to guarantee safety which has to be out first goal.”

Oakham were missing a few regulars and team selection has been a problem for Colwey who has not been able to call on the same side two weeks running all season.

“It’s frustrating not having players available,” he said as a crucial month against teams around them in the table begins at home to Ibstock 2nd XI tomorrow.

But confidence is high at the Kilns and Cowley added: “Rory Brown and Shyam Lakhani have really led the attack well but we need (spinner) Jamie Oakley to play more – unfortunately he has had work commitments.

“We have a few young bowlers coming through which is testament to the hard work carried out by Gordon Hubbard and his team, and more recently Nick Begy.

“I feel there is a good team spirit and quite a few 2nd XI players can step up. Nobody just makes numbers.”
