Burghley Park enjoyed double success at the weekend with the men’s and ladies’ teams both winning at the first stage of nationwide competitions.
The men made the short trip to Rutland County on Saturday where they battled hard to a 3-2 victory in the Mail on Sunday Competition.
New A team captain Mark Yarham was delighted to mark his first fixture in charge with a win, and applauded the team for their determination.
Juniors Matt Lem and Dean Vaughan got the team off to a great start, winning 3&2 and 2&1 respectively, and were followed by James Grant who also came in with a 3&2 win. Paul Ramm and Richard Allen both found themselves up against tough opponents, and lost 3&2 and 2&1.
On the following day, Burghley’s Ladies welcomed Elton Furze for the First Round of the Ladies Mail on Sunday knockout, and after a tough series of matches came out with a 3-2 win.
Margaret Middleton led the way with a 3&1 victory, supported by Jo Bell (won 2&1) and Kay Hircock (won 2&1).
Hannah Vaughan put up strong resistance against a determined opponent, losing on the 18th (1 down), and Joan Hickman went down 3&1.
l Round 5 of the Men’s Winter League is now complete with no change in the top two places in each league.
The likely qualifiers from the group stage are beginning to emerge but with two to go through to the knockout stages from each of the four leagues the next couple of weeks will be critical.
In Division A, long-standing leaders Chris Townshend and Alan Cole came up against an in-form Stuart Blesset and Martin Ash and went down 3&2, but still retain top spot from Bob Emmins and Chris Bradshaw by just a single point.
Emmins and Bradshaw overcame Richard Gilbert and Richard Cook 2&1, and hold a two point lead over Blesset and Ash, whose win took them up to third.
In Division B, the two leading teams both won but are still being chased hard by several other potential qualifiers.
Leaders Paul York and Mark Duffen enjoyed a good 3&2 win over Richard Allen and Paul Ramm to retain their three point lead over Stuart Ward and John Tyrrell, who held off Graham Bedford and Dave Tilley to win 1 Up.
Father and son team Phil and Lewin Auciello trounced Terry Austin and Peter Seyderhelm 5&4 to stay just a single point behind Ward and Tyrrell.
Division C now sees a two-way tie at the top, with long-time leaders Paul Wilkinson and John Mayman going down 3&2 to second placed John Tilley and Charlie Gardiner.
Both teams now have 12 points, five clear of both Clive Knox and Simon Tee, and Dean Vaughan and Matt Lem, who with only six points available in the remaining two matches have mountains to climb.
The only 100 percent record in the league is still alive in Division D where Graham Camp and Steve Hopkins were taken to the last hole by Peter Barnes and David Gibson before winning the match 1 Up.
Javan Argent and David Jackson retained 2nd place with a 2&1 win over Bernie Clark and Chris Neal, and hold a 2 point lead over third-placed Jon and Jake Brown, who overcame Andrew Sandel & Robert Howe 2&1.
The schedule for the remaining two rounds has been compressed due to the recent snow closure, with the result that Round 6 will be finished this weekend, and Round 7 next weekend.
