Alomst 100 hardy players braved a blast of wintery weather to compete in the Rutland County Golf Club’s Am-Am competitions.

Their efforts were rewarded with a course showing good late season form.

The home team of Deggie Palmer, Craig Allan, Pete Woolley and Jim Wilson triumphed with a score of 87 points. Burghley Park visitors, M Sissins, D Wade, G Jackson and S Chatman were second on 86 while M and K Seal, and P and J Bumpus were third on 85 pts.

A vicious wind tested the member’s endurance to the full during the October medal with only Braceborough’s Phil Drury breaking par on the day with a score of 82-13-69 in Division 2, which also secured him the lowest gross.

Bob Haynes nurdled his way to a net 74 and second place followed by new member Ray Caley on net 77. Paul Milsom shot 84-11-73 to win Division 1 followed By Kev Moxham 84-10-75 and Roger Overton 84-9-75 on countback.

John Peyser claimed the Scratch Knockout title by defeating Darren Child, who faded on the home stretch, to a 3 and 2 defeat.

There was a good turnout of 55 seniors, despite dampness underfoot and low cloud covering most of the course, for week 1 of the Winter Eclectic, which ran alongside a Stableford to enhance the day.

Results: Division 1 - 1st, Kevin Whittle, 39 pts; 2nd, John Phipps, 36pts. Division 2 - 1st, Phil Davis, 38 pts; 2nd Peter Aitkens with 37 pts (after countback).

Thirty-three seniors took part in Thursday’s 2 from 3 Roll-Up competition Bob Billinger, Geoff Osborne and Alan Garner triumphant with a score of 81.

The B team finished their season with the narrowest of defeats losing 3-2 at Orton Meadows.

The match hinged on Eric Cooper and Pete Siciliano’s tight match which was lost 1-down. Kev Moxham and Pete Dawson lost 2 and 1, Chris Palmer and Chris Bowers lost 5 and 4, Martyn Gatehouse and in-form Phil Drury cruised to a 5 and 3 victory, Rod Goss and Graham Smith won 3 and 2.

Karen Palmer scored a business-like 34 points to win the Ladies October Stableford ahead of Suzanne Huxley on 32 points, who was just ahead of Bridget Yardley on 31.

The Ladies 9-hole October Stableford was won by Julia Woods with 14 points on countback ahead of Margaret Agnew. Wendy Bryan came in with 13 points for 3rd place.
