Rutland eked out their fourth draw of the season from a game that they could have won but for some outstanding goalkeeping.
They were held 4-4 by Wisbech Town 3rd XI but although Rutland were denied a late winner by a fabulous save to Jo Chedd’s rising shot, they had fought brilliantly back from 3-1 down early in the second half.
As has often been the case, Rutland started too slowly and switched off defensively, allowing Wisbech to counter-attack with a quick ball to their skilful centre forward to score the opening goal.
Slowly Rutland began to pile on the pressure, with several short corners and attempts at goal thwarted before they finally equalised through Will Astbury.
However, Wisbech continued to make breaks of their own and retook the lead from a short corner just before the break.
Rutland were again caught on a break soon after the restart but finding themselves 3-1 down stepped up a gear. They were soon in the ascendency, repeatedly penetrating the Wisbech D, for Owen Evans and Jordan Allen to score and level the game at 3-3.
Rutland continued to press forward for Robert Forster to fire in one of his powerful strikes from a short corner to take the lead but Rutland then sat back, allowing Wisbech to come forward and score an equaliser of their own.
Rutland once again pressed for the win but the Wisbech keeper pulled off save after save, including what seemed an impossible stop as Chedd fired a shot towards the roof of the net and the keeper, having just saved one shot, managed to leap across the face of the goal to deny Rutland their win.
