Cup win rewrites the history books

Stamford indoor bowlers have reached the third round of the English inter-club championship for the first time in the club’s 20-year history after a thrilling seven shot defeat of Boston in the Denny Cup.

Underdogs after Boston’s demolition of Sleaford, the players rose to the challenge, winning by two shots in the away leg and holding the visitors at bay by five shots at home.

Again the phones lines were busy as news came through that Paul Bailey’s rink had surged into a 23-9 lead at Boston with two ends to play, tipping the overall scales narrowly in Stamford’s favour - only then to drop shots in consecutive ends.

Fortunately Bob Warters’ home rink claimed a four count on the last end to put the result beyond doubt and earn a tough clash with Spalding in the next round.

Sadly Stamford bowlers were unable to complete the double over Boston in the Egham Trophy national mixed competition the following day suffering a 100-54 defeat in the double rink, home and away contest.

The two clubs meet again on Sunday in the Top Ten tournament, playing singles, mixed pairs triples and fours at Stamford (3pm), following a B team match against Long Sutton (midday).
