Fusion, one of Rutland’s newest teams, quickly made their mark in the Rutland County Netall League with a debut win last Thursday.

Fusion beat Stan’s Stars 27-8 in division two with an incredible defensive display from goalkeeper Maikale Sulyaqalo, who was largely responsible for holding Star’s to just one goal in the first quarter.

Leading 3-1 going into the second quarter, Fusion brought on Olivia Gilchrist as goalshooter and she was in a class of her own, helping them storm to a 8-2 lead by half time.

Kat McKenna and Mel Asher score some impressive goals for Stars but Gilchrist only got better, enabling fusion to finish with an impressive 27-8 debut victory.

Fusion: Maikale Sulyaqalo, Olivia Gilchrist, Laura Harvey, Laura Marsden, India Thompson, Katy Shephard, Becca Lewis, Caroline Tradewell, Nicky Gilchrist

Stan’s Stars: Michelle Pugh, Anna Robinson, Sonia Newton, Sam Lake, Danielle Munton, Mel Asher, Kat McKenna, Nicola Forbes.

DPS beat Oakham Ospreys in the first division one match of the night.

After a successful debut season, Ospreys were hoping to make their mark in the winter league but after a tight first period, Ospreys faded.

DPs dominated in the remaining three quarters thanks to a strong performance from Esther Palmer, and high-class defending from Louise Short and Tilly Cummings.

Ospreys: Poppy Spencer, Fern Spencer, Tracey Spencer, Vicki Bradley, Marianne Hooper, Sharon Clarke, Jen Smith.

DPS: Louise Short, Tilly Cumming, Lisa Hamilton, Nicola Grant, Nikki Lewin, Ellie Kidson, Esther Palmer.

Rutland Jewells met Rutland Belles in the second division two match of the night with Jewells keen to capitalise on their success of the previous week, hoping to go top of the division with another win.

But Belles had other ideas and edged the first quarter 6-4 thanks to strong centre court play from Amber O’Berg and an impressive performance from Amanda Mason.

However, after a tough team talk from captain Michelle Pickersgill, Jewells began working the ball down court with ease, enabling Caroline Drage to push her team to a 14-9 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Belles fought back in the 4th, with another sterling performance from Louise Beaver at goal defence, but Jewells clung on to win 16-14 and take their place at the top of division two.

Jewells: Kathi Aylward, Michele Bennett, Heidi O’Donogan, Lisa Lambert, Michelle Pickersgill, Katy Duncan, Caroline Drage, Ali Woodruff, Jo Harley.

Belles: Alison Long, Louise Beaver, Kate Maxim, Amber O’Berg, Jane Booth, Amanda Mason, Jo Nicholl.

In the final division one game, Panthers beat Mercury 37-22.
