Hopefuls nudged out of semi-final spot by the narrowest of margins
Stamford bowlers were literally nudged out of a place in the area semi-finals of the National Over 60s double rinks when they lost out to former champions Lincoln on an extra end after the scores were tied at 44-44.
At Stamford, the home rink skipped by Martyn Dolby won 29-15, while Peter Edwards’ away rink lost by an identical score.
After initial confusion regarding the overall score after both rinks had played 21 ends, Edwards’ quartet of Alan Romaine, Derek King and Keith Rippin, thinking they had lost the match by two shots, headed off to change.
Minutes later they were told the scores were level and they had to get back into bowls kit to play a deciding end. And when Rippin drew the shot, Lincoln skip Mike Smith had one bowl to retrieve the match. He did it with a cruel deflection which turned a Lincoln bowl in for the vital count.
At Stamford, Dolby’s home side of Bob Warters, Mike Ramsden and Doug Want were always in control after an early hiccup and only a killed end and some accurate firing by Lincoln’s No.3 robbed them of a bigger score.
l In the Lincs Men’s League Division One at the weekend, Stamford gained revenge for an earlier whitewash by Boston by taking 16 of the 18 points available, thanks to a 117-80 scoreline and four winning rinks.
Best of the bunch was the 25-13 win by Alan Romaine, Trevor Harris, Martin Bailey and his brother Paul.
l Stamford’s women’s team lost at Lincoln in the Trudy Bates League with June Brennan, Carol Warters, Rose Marsh and Chris Ford returning the only winning rink.
