Bourne’s Maddie Gammons took the Midlands U14 girls Cyclo-Cross Championship at a breezy Leicester course at the weekend.
Right from the off Maddie set the pace and she was never challenged by her rivals.
Her pace was so dominant that she only finished a handful of seconds behind last year’s national U16 silver medalist. Halfway round the first of three 10-minute laps, Maddie had a commanding 30 second lead.
Somewhere around the back half of the circuit the Bourne teenager made a mistake which allowed her nearest challenger edge fractionally closer but from that point onwards the gap simply stretched further and further until Maddie crossed the line with 90 seconds in hand.
After a delayed start to the season due to a broken collar bone in September, Maddie is finally showing the form her Bourne Wheeler colleagues expected, and with the biggest race of the cross season less than a month away, a medal at the national championships is a real possibility.
Unfortunately for the club, their other medal contender Tim James was a non-starter due to illness.
Sian Botteley battled hard for fourth junior girl and Aaron Bateman and Adam Botteley had a race long duel which Aaron eventually won coming home in 15th place in the U14 boys race.
Bart Kiers was the club’s only finisher in the seniors’ race, taking 22nd place.
Veteran racer Mark Botteley pulled out half way through after suffering a second crash.
