Bourne Wheeler Maddie Gammons on the podium, right, after finishing third in the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series at South Shields

Bourne’s Maddie Gammons rode an outstanding ride to take third place in the latest round of the national cyclo-cross Trophy Series.

Maddie, along with another elite Bourne Wheeler youth rider, Tim James, was racing at South Shields against some of the best young riders in the country.

After a tough first few races, Maddie has recovered from a broken collar bone, and displayed brilliant form to finish just two minutes behind the leaders.

Maddie and Tim both rode superbly on a challenging national level course in tough conditions.

After a run of top results in the U16 category, Tim suffered a mechanical problem which forced him to the back of the field but he still managed to work his way to 15th place.

Meanwhile, several more of the Bourne cyclo-cross team travelled to Winterton in the Lincolnshire league.

As the only Bourne youth rider, Adam Botteley flew the flag for the team with excellent pace to finish fifth despite a fall on the ice.

In the senior race, Sian Botteley was unlucky to puncture after two laps, putting her out of the race. Mark Botteley put in the best performance of the day, coming home in 12th for his best performance of the season.

This weekend, a full compliment of Wheelers will head to Leicester for the Midlands championship.

Maddie, Tim and Sian will all be looking to get among the medals in their respective categories, while Adam Botteley and Aaron Bateman will be aiming to back up their more experienced teammates.

Bourne’s sole representative in the senior race will be Mark Botteley, who finished sixth in this race two years ago and will target a top ten place.
