The Mean Valley All Stars fought hard to retain their winning streak when they took on The Bruising Banditas from Halifax at Catmose Sports on Saturday.

After a great start, the Meanies were ahead by 20 points following the first jam. They retained the lead until jam seven when the Banditas scored 22 points, storming ahead. The blow seemed to knock the Meanies’ confidence as they fought to get the upper hand.

At half time the score was Mean Valley trailed 79-77.

The Banditas made an energetic start to the second half, and by jam 30, the Banditas had a 28 point lead, forcing the Mean Valley girls to reassess their tactics.

In jam 41 the Banditas’ jammer was sent off and Gair Booth from Uppingham took full advantage of her “power jam” situation, scoring 24 points and taking the Meanies into a 129-124 lead with only four minutes remaining.

Despite a last ditch effort from the Banditas, the Mean Valley All Stars held on to win 132-129.

Mean Valley coach and captain, Emma Grove, said: “I’m really proud of the team today. It shows how far we have come and we can’t wait for the 2013 season.”

Team mate Kara Allen added: “When the pressure is on, we pull it together.”

Awards were given to Meanies Claire Byrne for best blocker; Annabelle Saker-Neale for best jammer and the most valued player was Michelle Ginieres.

The Mean Valley All Stars will take on Birmingham Blitz Dames’ B Team on December 8 at Bushfields Leisure Centre, Peterborough.
