MTTG strengthen grip on second spot

MTTG A strengthened their grip on second spot in division one of the Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League with a 10-0 victory over Stamford School.

Although a number of the matches were competitive, the trio of Chris Weston, Andy Goodacre and Dave Needham not only secured the win but ensured an improved sets-difference.

Mike Peacock was the star when Bourne A hosted Braunston A. Despite Brian Bodycote and Chuck Kershaw each winning twice for the villagers, Michael’s full-house ensured a share of the points.

It was a busier week in Division two where Braunston B enjoyed the most significant result. Close rivals Bourne C had realistic hopes of a top-two place this season but their 9-1 defeat at Braunston means that they will need to win their remaining matches to have a chance of success.

Carl Slevin and Basil Bagshaw were unbeaten for Braunston, and Marty Stamper chipped in with two further points. Kevin Day scored the consolation point for Bourne, and this might still prove crucial.

Eastfield C took advantage of Bourne C’s slip-up and earned an impressive 8-2 win over Tallington A. Nash Tejani and Florian Apopi were unbeaten, and, with Mark Harding’s brace, they will remain hot on the bats of Braunston B for the remaining weeks of the season.

Stamford Free Church picked up useful points following a win and a draw. Their win was over Tallington B and Rob Elliott was unbeaten. John Chambers and George Hetherington each won twice for the Churchmen, while Jake Shouler played well to reply with two points for Tallington who are having an improved league season.

Stamford Free Church’s draw was at Bourne D. Again, Rob Elliott was unbeaten, while Chris Holland and Kevin Greenfield each won twice for Bourne D.

Kevin and Chris also won twice in Bourne D’s second match of the week against Nomads, which they won 7-3. Team-mate Stuart Wills joined them as a two-time winner, but they were all beaten by Nomads’ Nick McDowall.
