Record numbers enjoy tight contest

A record number of almost 100 bowlers took part in the annual Mick Owens Trophy Tournament at the Stamford and District Indoor Bowls Club.

Competing in two sections of 12 teams of four players, each team - from near beginners to national champions - played four eight-end matches with their points for games and ends won combining with shots to build an overall total.

As well as comprehensive wins there were some thrilling needle matches and a few shocks along the way.

At the half way stage several rinks were in contention for the £120 first prize with a couple of wins under their belts and it began to look as if millimetres between winning or losing a count was to be crucial.

And so it proved, with the husband and wife rink of Carol and Bob Warters and Christine and Alan Barnes securing a total of 28 points. This, despite losing a match to Christine Ford’s quartet, but claiming a 12-2 win in their final match to clinch the crystal trophy for the first time.

When Martyn Dolby’s rink of Steven Harris and Jan and Doug Want dropped a third end by less than a centimetre to Pam Mumford’s four they had to concede second place to Joyce Foster, Ken Rawlins, Connie Cox and Glenys Edwards with an inferior shots total despite both finishing on 27. Fourth with 25 points were Dave Hudson, Wally Kettle, Margaret Bloxham and Ray Harvey.

Club secretary Carol Warters said: “It’s great to see so many new bowlers taking part. The club is growing from strength to strength and we’re hoping more potential players will turn up for our next free 0pen morning on Saturday, January 5.”
