Sights set on life in the top flight

STAMFORD Indoor Bowls Club Men’s A team stretched their lead at the top of the Second Division of the County League with a 114-87 home victory over nearest rivals Long Sutton A.

With just two away games to play next month - at Skegness and Horncastle - the team looks destined for the top division now that Lincolnshire IBA has confirmed that the leading two teams in all divisions will be promoted.

Stamford hold a 34-point lead after securing 16 points against Long Sutton with rinks skipped by Richard Montgomery and captain Paul Bailey claiming vital winning points on the last end.

Stamford’s Mixed team also look assured of promotion from Division Two following a 116-63 triumph over Grantham. They lost on only one rink and increased their lead at the top to 24 points with three games to play.

A home win over rivals Scunthorpe on Sunday (2pm), will guarantee the championship and Division One status against the cream of the county next season.

l LOCAL bowlers featured in a Northants Federation team that lost a vital clash with holders Norfolk in the inter-county Derbyshire Trophy.

Despite wins for 2-wood triples rinks skipped by Peter Edwards and Adam Warrington, Northants lost by 22-shots overall and secured only six points.

Warrington will feature alongside Martyn Dolby on February 25 (6.30pm) at Grantham in the area final of the English Indoor Pairs against Matt Whyers and Graham Smith (Spalding).

Jan Want, Margaret Andrews and Christine Ford became the first Stamford bowlers to reach the Northants EWBF county finals to be played at Stamford (March 18) when they beat Julie Masters rink at Peterborough 25-11 in the women’s triples semi-finals.
