Vale Judo Club's Sofia Palmer won gold at the HMC Independent Schools and IAPS Judo Tournament for Girls on Saturday

Vale Judo Club competitors picked up more medals at events at the weekend with Sofia Palmer claiming gold at High Wycombe.

Sofia arrived late at the Independent Schools Championships at High Wycombe but despite having little time to warm up she stormed through the group (U12, U48kg) stage winning four fights before beating a higher-graded girl with a classic Uchi Mata throw in the final to win gold.

Also on Saturday, Daniel Bennett and Alex Cutforth fought at the Midland Area U21 Age-banded ranking event at Walsall with Daniel claiming silver in a tough pool of U66kg pre-cadets. Alex fought in the U57kg group.

On Sunday, four Vale warriors - Bryony Cutforth, Emma Phillip, Joe Potter and James Reseigh - all fought at Walsall.

Both girls took silver medals with Bryony taking a podium place on her competitive debut at U36kg, seeing off several higher grade opponents to win a silver medal.

Emma was up against England’s number one in the u50kg (cadet) group but showed determination and improvement to win a silver medal.

Both boys fought well at U34kg (pre-cadets) and U66kg (cadets) with close contests but failed to take medals.

Vale Judo Club is running beginners courses for junior and seniors on Saturdays. For details visit www.valejudo.org.uk
