Stamford set for top-of-table clash
STAMFORD Indoor Bowls Club’s A team has established a 20-point lead at the top of the Second Division of the Lincolnshire League ahead of tomorrow’s crucial home fixture with nearest rivals Long Sutton (2pm),
Long Sutton took 15 points from the clubs’ clash earlier in the season but Stamford’s 16-2 win at Grantham at the weekend ensure they hold the upper hand with three matches to play and visits to Skegness and Horncastle still to be made as they push for promotion for the first time in Stamford’s 20-year history.
Key to Stamford’s win at Grantham was the rink of Ray Harniess, Steve Travis, Malcolm Cullingworth and Richard Montgomery. They trailed 1-11 after six ends but then claimed 10 of the next 11 ends to eventually run out 23-15 winners.
Stamford’s mixed team will be aiming to increase their lead at the top of the Second Division on Sunday against Grantham (2pm), following the Northants Federation’s vital Derbyshire Trophy match against Norfolk (10am), in which eight Stamford players are taking part.

l STAMFORD IBC members were saddened by the death this week of Betty Warters, its founder lady president in 1991-92, who had celebrated her 90th birthday at the club in December.
Betty was a former National President of the English and Northants Bowling Federations and founder president of the Huntingdonshire EWBA.
She was EWBF national singles champion in successive years (1982-83), won the pairs twice with fellow Stamford IBC member Nora Holt (1974 & 1981) and the triples once (1991) with Nora and the late Marjorie Kilby.
A resident of Blackstones Court, Stamford, she represented Hunts in all disciplines at the English Women’s Outdoor championships at Leamington Spa over many years, lost in the final of the singles to the legendary Mavis Steele and won the EWBA Over 55 pairs with Joyce Holden from Peterborough. The funeral is at Marholm Crematorium is on Friday, February 24 (1.30pm).
