Vale teenager is recruited by British squad
Vale Judo Club's Daniel Bennett with the club's head coach Mike Newton
Teenager Daniel Bennett has become the latest in a line of talented youngsters from Vale Judo Club to be selected for national honours.
Daniel, 13, has been called up for the England Judo Squad, run by the British Judo Association.
The Uppingham Community College pupil is one of 30 pre-cadets to be chosen after he put in two gold-medal winning performances this year.
“My main aim now is to win the British nationals,” said the blue belt, who trains up to four nights a week with the Oakham club.
Competing in the under 66kg category, Daniel took up the sport through the club’s annual Primary School’s Programme six years ago.
Head coach at the club, Mike Newton praised Daniel and added: “He is the 11th from the club to get into a national squad in 10 years. We have consistently had someone in the England squad since we started.”
