Victory lifts Braunston into top spot

Braunston have returned to the top of Division 1 of the Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League by beating Bourne A 7-3.

The scoreline seems conclusive, but it could have been reversed if Rod Goss had enjoyed better fortune in the fifth set of each of his singles matches.

Brian Bodycote starred for Braunston with three wins, and Graham Cooper supported him with two points. Mike Willis replied with a brace for Bourne, but their search for consistent success continues.

MTTG Eastfield cling to second spot despite falling to a 3-7 reverse at the bats of Hampton.

MTTG A retained their perfect record with a 9-1 win at Stamford School.

Andy Goodacre displayed fine form to win his three matches, while Chris Weston – a little less comfortably - also won three times. Dave Needham picked up two points while Richard Henry scored the consolation point for the academics.

First played second in Division 2, as Eastfield C beat Bourne C 6-4 in a competitive yet unpredictable match, with four players winning twice and none unbeaten.

Bourne’s Harry Jackson said: “The match was nip and tuck all the way, with Harry Jackson and Mike Shattock both winning two out of three singles encounters in five set thrillers.”

Bourne lost the crucial final doubles match but provided a tough test for Eastfield, who remain the only unbeaten team in the division.

Nomads and Stamford Free Church drew 5-5 with Rob Elliott unbeaten for the Free Church. Rob was joined by John Chambers to win the doubles.

Performance of the week, however, was that of Tallington B, whose youngsters won for the first time in the league.

Uffington B’s Chris Gardiner tried hard to lengthen the boys’ wait by remaining unbeaten, but Jake Shouler and Ben Lewis proved determined adversaries and secured the all-important sixth point in the doubles.
