Oakham primed for Tigers test

OAKHAM RFC U10s will fly the flag for Rutland in this season’s Prima Tiger Cup when they compete in the semi-final at Welford Road today.

Oakham, the defending Prima Tiger Cup champions, will take on Bury St Edmunds at the world-famous home of Leicester Tigers for a place in the final.

The other semi-final will be between Melbourne and Stourbridge, and the games will be held before Tigers face Italian side Aironi in Europe’s Heineken Cup.

Oakham head coach Ben Hunt said: “The players are really excited.

“They got a taste of it at the quarter-finals in December and we had a pretty good training session on Sunday so we’re looking forward to Saturday.

“The vast majority of the players are big Tigers fans so it was a huge thing to play there.

“I don’t know how many will be supporting us but we have a lot of parents, grandparents, friends and who knows who else. There will be a lot there.

“One of the great things about the competition, from the qualifiers to the knock-out stages, is the quality of rugby. I love watching our boys playing against good teams and being tested.”

* OAKHAM RFC will welcome Tigers to their Barleythorpe Road home next month when they host the first Tigers rugby course of the year.

Tigers coaches will be at Oakham for a week-long course during the February half-term (February 13-17) and spaces are still available.

To book a place, contact the Tigers community team on 0844 856 1880 or visit the community section of the Tigers website.

* TIGERS will return to Oakham again on Sunday, April 22 for the Land Rover Premiership Cup.

Under 11s and U12s teams will compete in the festival with the winning sides in each age group taking part in the Land Rover Parade of Champions at half-time of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham in May.
