Stamford are frustrated in vital pool tie

Stamford U16s played last year’s semi-finalists, Melbourne, in their second pool match of the Notts, Lincs and Derby Cup.

Without several key players, it was a tough fixture with the outcome likely to decide the pool winners and this year’s automatic semi-final place.

Melbourne started the better of the two teams scoring an early converted try but Stamford responded well, pushing Melbourne back deep into their own half.

Strong forward pressure resulted in repeated Melbourne infringements and Stamford’s line-out capitalised territorially, resulting in a drive over try for Angus Collett.

Stamford continued to punish the opposition’s poor discipline by kicking for touch in the second half. However, Melbourne’s resilient defence continued to frustrate the Stamford.

Melbourne continued to run lines from deep and added two more tries, one converted, which effectively put the game beyond Stamford.

Further Melbourne indiscipline resulted in ugly exchanges and the referee called time early with Melbourne winning 19–5.

Stamford: Elliott Moss, Callum Norris, Sam Duncan, Jordan Baxter, Oliver Winspear, Jack Jones, Mark Sclanders, Angus Collett, Tom Davies, Rory Pears, Luke Ford, Kieran Hynes, Oliver Sherwin, Dan Sproul, Andy Marshall and Johnny Smith.

Stamford U13s knew their trip to Market Harborough would be a tough test but despite losing four quick first-half tries they fought back well to 22-14.

Harborough were organized but Thain, at scrum half, managed to create a few opportunities and this released a bit of pressure and reassured the boys as they grew into the game.

Tails rose in the second half and tackling from Buck, Moon and Penrose-Toms saw the home team on the back foot.

A superb succession of off-loads meant Henry was able to break free on the wing and score a good solo try.

This was the start of sustained pressure from Stamford which was rewarded with a turn over and try from Henry.

Despite superb conversions from Batty, Stamford still had to work hard with a series of attacks held-up on the Stamford line.

Stamford showed strong character with an outstanding man-of-the-match performance from Toby Anderson.

Stamford: Zach Morley, Toby Anderson, Daniel Moon, Henry Dunn, George Chandler, Harry Nightingale, Charlie Thain, Jack Batty, Charlie Germany, Ben Chisholm, Jonathan Buck, Charlie Penrose-Toms.
