Stamford skipper delighted by cup draw

Stamford RFC will face 2011 Midlands champions Stourbridge Lions in the regional semi-finals of this season’s RFU Senior Vase.

Stamford have drawn the Lions at home on January 19, and skipper Matt Albinson is delighted by the draw.

Albinson said: “It’s exactly what I wanted. Firstly because it’s at home, and also because I wanted to draw them.

“I wanted to keep away from Rushden and Higham (who Stamford already face in the league this season). It’s nice to play an unknown quantity.”

Stourbridge, who beat Kesteven in the last round, currently sit fourth with six victories, a draw and three losses in the Midlands West 3 (North) table - a parallel division to Stamford’s - while Stamford still boast a 100 percent record.

Albinson, who has been involved at Stamford since joining as 13-year-old, 16 seasons ago, hopes for a big Stamford crowd to back his side.

He added: “It is going to be the biggest game at the club for many years. I cannot remember us getting anywhere near this position.”

The winners of the Midlands competition will go into a play-off against other regional champions for a place in the grand final at Twickenham.

The second regional semi-final sees Old Leamingtonians travel to Rushden & Higham.

Stamford’s league match against Old Newtonians was cancelled at the last minute on Saturday when the division’s bottom club claimed they were unable to field a front row.

Frustrated at his side not being able to rack up a big score, Albinson said the club was likely to claim the home win rather than replay the tie.

Albinson said: “We will not get the benefit of winning by a 50 or 60 points but we will at least get five match points and hopefully at the end of the season it will not come to points scored.”

Stamford RFC travel to Daventry on Saturday before returning home for their final match of 2012, against Stockwood Park, on December 22 when the club will also be celebrating it’s 110th anniversary.
