NLD Shield Semi-final
STAMFORD are through to the final of the NLD Shield after beating Kesteven 6-0 in last Saturday’s semi.
Playing on a muddy pitch with a strong cross wind Stamford fought their way into their third NLD final in as many years and skipper Oli Story was delighted.
He said: “Although we made hard work of it, we are pleased to be in the NLD final for the third year in a row, and with a chance of playing a team from a higher league.
“Myself and all of the boys will be eagerly awaiting the challenge.”
Stamford will play Midlands 2 East (North) side Nottingham Moderns in the final.
Saturday’s opponents Kesteven were undefeated since October and hadn’t lost to Stamford in 18 years but it was time to update the record books.
Town started with an intensity and ambition that the bigger Kesteven side couldn’t match.
Great carrying by Frank Wiese and James Green got Stamford over the gain line to release the backs although the waves of attacks were thwarted by Kesteven or wasted through poor handling.
The pressure eventually told and after repeated infringements at the breakdown Stamford were awarded two penalties which Laurent Ross converted for a 6-0 half time lead.
Kesteven upped their intensity and physicality after the interval and Stamford spent most of the half defending.
But Town’s discipline was excellent, denying Kesteven the opportunity to kick for points or gain easy territory and Stamford secured their spot in the final.
Stamford play Rushden and Higham in the league at Empingham Road tomorrow. Kick off is at 2.15pm.
