EMPINGHAM made it two from two in the Grantham League’s third tier with a victory at Houghton on Sunday.
The Rutlanders won the toss and chose to field first with Freddy Turner and Dave McKevitt opening the bowling. But Houghton got off to a good start with the first partnership reaching 58 before Rob McKevitt got the breakthrough bowling Edmonds for 20. McKevitt finished with 4 for 53 off 10 overs, including the scalp of dangerman Griggs on 73 with a great catch from Gary Cooper.
Dave McKevitt bowled 10 overs straight through from the top end, taking two for 48, and Dan O’Kane kept it tight with batsmen finding it hard to score runs against the wind. Baz Sharp came on to take the final three wickets with Houghton finishing on 178.
The strong wind made it especially hard for bowlers from the pavilion end but everyone bowled well.
All Empingham’s batsmen chipped in but no-one went on to score a 50. Turner (21) and Mark Coburn opened with Coburn falling first for 10. Russel Hibbitt (24) and Sharp (19) batted well but couldn’t go on. Tom Cooper and R McKevitt built the match winning partnership of 62 scoring runs quickly in the middle overs but neither could see the match out. It was left to Ben Stephens and O’Kane to see the game through with 2 overs to go. Empingham finished on 179 for 7.
