Sims impresses with five-star performance
FORMER Stamford Schoolboy Alexander Sims raced to an impressive fifth place in the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort, Holland.
Based in Wansford, Sims was up against the best young drivers in the world at a race where previous winners have included F1 champion Lewis Hamilton.
Sims, racing with the German team Mcke Motorsport, had never seen the track but with just 30 minutes practice on Saturday morning went straight into a timed qualifying shoot out to determine the 38-strong grid.
Sims made eighth position just less than half a second behind the leader.
In front of a massive crowd, he got a great start immediately gaining one place over team-mate Christian Vietoris, quickly moving up to sixth before making one of the best overtaking manoeuvres of the race when he swept around the outside of Vernay at a corner called Tarzan.
The breathtaking manoeuvre impressed the crowd and from there Sims carried on his strong performance, completing the 25 lap race in in a highly respectable fifth position.
A delighted Sims said: “It’s only my third F3 race meeting so being the best placed driver in my team is good plus a top five finish is excellent.
“I am pleased everything went according to plan and the fifth place is certainly what I deserved.
“My performance is improving and I know I have a lot more to give.”
Sims’ next race will be at the street circuit Norisring, Germany on June 27 and 28 in round three of the F3 Euro Series.
