Market Deeping fell just short in a tight game against Spalding as the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League got under way.
Spalding’s Warren Nel hit the lone century, an unbeaten 116, contributing to the highest scoring game of the day at Spalding where over 500 runs came.
Batting first, Spalding notched up 258 for eight, Josh Newton contributing 58 in a second wicket partnership of 118 with Nel.
Market Deeping’s reply also started well, Chris Jones and Jamie Morgan putting on 99 for the first wicket.
Both fell on this score but Alex Wheatley built on the good start, ably assisted by Lee Peacock and Tom Andrews.
Two wickets for Charlie Kearns gave Spalding hope of an outright win but Deeping continued to narrow the gap until the overs ran out with the score just 14 short of the target, Wheatley finishing unbeaten on 65.
Market Deeping 2nds took on Eaton Socon 2nds in Rutland League Division 5.
The start was delayed by 20 minutes due to rain, and Deeping lost Rich Williams to a direct hit run out on the fourth ball.
This brought 13-year-old Nick Green (56) and 18-year-old Connor Gillette (34) together for a watchful 105 run partnership off 25 overs.
The pitch was damp and accurate bowling from Eaton’s young bowling attack reduced the run rate.
The runs started to flow more easily from Sam Pateman (30) and Richard Pickering (53 not out), scoring his maiden 50.
This was the club’s seventh 50 in four games this season as Deeping finished on 219-7.
Three wickets were taken by the impressive young female bowler, A Presland.
More heavy rain during the interval delayed the restart and Eaton never looked like they could chase down the total set by Deeping.
Rich Williams got payback with one of two run outs.
There was also a wicket each for Pateman and Pearson and several rain stops before the heavens opened to end the game with Eaton on 51-4 at the close.
