Teenage batsman hits double century

Teenage batting ace Jamie McCormack hit a remarkable double century as Oakham 2nds shattered a host of records on Sunday.

The 17-year-old made 200 out of an astonishing 411-6 as the Rutlanders thrashed Market Deeping 2nds by a massive 319 runs.

It was a record total in the Rutland League and the highest ever made by an Oakham Cricket Club XI, who scored at more than nine runs per over in the Division 6 clash.

Oakham skipper Andrew Counsell said: "Winning the toss was vital on such a glorious wicket and outfield for batting. "A double century is never going to be chanceless at any level but Jamie McCormack's effort was a fantastic performance for a 17-year-old. His strokeplay was effortless at times and Market Deeping's bowling just couldn't stem the flow of runs."

On a glorious summer's day Oakham won the toss and chose to bat. On a hard wicket and lightning fast outfield the top order, with only one change in the top six from the previous week's defeat by Ketton - Williams replacing the unavailable Halliwell - they quickly pilied on the runs.

The first wicket fell after 16 overs with the score on 65 and the precocious McCormack already on 50. This brought Neil Southern to the wicket and the pair plundered the wilting Market Deeping attack

Exquisite timing from McCormack and strong strokeplay from Southern allowed the pair to add 199 runs in only 18 overs before Southern was bowled for 80.

McCormack was still there on 161 and was joined by Richie Williams (50) for another rapid partnership which saw the youngster reach a quite magnificent double century before finally giving his wicket away with the score on 348.

With five overs left, Williams and John Morton (26) ensured that Oakham closed on a record breaking 411-6 in 45 overs. All the Deeping front line bowlers suffered with one breaking a century from his 10 overs.

Having earlier lost their opening batsmen with a nasty finger injury when trying to catch McCormack, a demoralised Market Deeping 2nds were never likely to get close.

Nevertheless, after a sloppy first two overs the Oakham bowlers got to work. A fine opening spell of left arm swing bowling from Kev Mullins (4-32) was well supported by Matt Osman's crafty off spin, from which he returned figures of 4-14.

There was also some superb catching and outfielding which saw Market Deeping slump to 92 all out, with skipper Ben Rae - normally a number 11 batsman - carrying his bat for 28 not out.

Deeping's only other batsman in double figures was Shinkins, with 24, as Oakham finished convincing winners.

Counsell added: "The partnership with Neil Southern was stunning as it is pretty rare for both batsmen to take apart the bowling attack at the same time.

"It was almost like a very high scoring 20/20 game for the 18 overs they were together."
