Bourne take a massive step towards promotion
Bourne’s junior tennis team shook off their rustiness after a long weather-enforced break to win a top-of-the-table clash against Deeping C.
Deeping have been the only team to take points off Bourne so far this season, but Tom Hill and Jack Mangieri started in excellent form for Bourne.
In atrocious conditions, they raced into a quick lead by virtue of their intelligent net play and managed to hold on to eke out a 6-3, 5-4 victory over Deeping’s first pair.
Bourne’s top pair, on the other hand, had a tougher time of the opening rubber as Matt Hassall and Ed Nation struggled for rhythm, being forced to save four set points in the final game of the first set before claiming it.
But a poor start to the second set cost them and a comeback from 0-4 down failed at the final hurdle, resulting in a 5-4, 4-5 draw.
As the rain slowed, Deeping began to gain more of a foothold in the match, and Tom and Jack, having blistered through the first set of the next rubber, suddenly dropped off and failed to contend with their opponent’s resilience, drawing 6-3, 2-7.
Knowing that a loss in their final rubber would result in a repeat of the early-season draw between these two sides, Matt and Ed played two exceptional sets of tennis, racing into 5-0 leads in both as their all-action, intense style paid dividends, winning 6-3, 7-2 to claim a vital win in the promotion race and a 6-2 scoreline that severely damages Deeping C’s own hopes of claiming the Division 2 title.
