Derby day disappointment for Bourne B at the hands of Deeping while A team squeaks past top challengers

There was disappointment for Bourne B as they slipped to a narrow defeat against a very strong Deeping B team in a local derby.

First pair Iain Ross and Nigel Bridgewater were edged out in their opening set but recovered strongly to tie their first rubber 4-5, 6-3.

However, Deeping had put out a young but very talented side and, despite their superior match experience, second Bourne pair Douglas Main and Linda Brunton were kept at bay in a 4-5, 3-6 loss.

Iain and Nigel maintained their recovery to take their final two sets without much trouble, 8-1, 6-3, forcing Deeping to close out an excellent win with a brutal 2-7, 1-8 despatch of Douglas and Linda to complete at 3-5 loss for the home side and avenge their 7-1 defeat at the hands of Bourne A earlier in the season.

Bourne A, the club’s junior tennis team, secured a vitally important result with a narrow 5-3 victory against JB Squad, early Division 2 favourites, in Peterborough.

JB Squad wasted no time in throwing down the gauntlet to their promotion challengers as Tom Hill and Alex Ross were outclassed, losing 1-8, 0-9 that could have been closer had the Bourne pair been able to take more of their chances.

Bourne were level at the halfway point, though, as Matt Hassall and Jack Mangieri, erratic at times, outhit their opponents during the first set, taking it 5-4, and led 2-1, 40-15 in the second set when one of JB Squad’s players was forced to retire with illness.

Since that retirement meant Tom and Alex would have no further part to play in the match, being granted a 9-0, 9-0 win, Matt and Jack needed just a single set against JB Squad’s top pair.

But they started poorly, winning just one point during the opening two games.

Jack clinched his crucial service game after that, though, and Bourne then turned the tables to take the first set 6-3, making overall victory certain.

With the match secure, the intensity dropped and the rubber finished as a 6-3, 3-6 draw, but nevertheless it was a determined win for Bourne against the division’s strongest side.
