Juniors crowned league champions as appeal fails
Bourne Tennis Club’s juniors were confirmed as champions of the Peterborough & District Summer League by a single point as a late appeal by second-placed Spalding C fell short.
Bourne finished the season in style, defeating third-placed Deeping D by a 17-3 aggregate over two matches to overtake both Deeping and Spalding and establish a large lead that left Spalding needing two whitewashes to claim the title.
However, Bourne’s rivals and the pacesetters for the second half of the season only managed a 9-0 and an 8-1 win in the closing weeks and so Bourne took first place with 135 points to Spalding’s 134.
Bourne were the only team to defeat Spalding all season, taking a comeback 5-4 victory in the away fixture after going 1-4 down.
Though Spalding only lost once and Bourne lost twice, Bourne’s superiority against the division’s lower teams gave them a second successive title in the mainly adult league after triumphing in Division 4 last year.
Bourne’s second men’s team ended a difficult season on a high with a resounding away win over Boston 6.
After two unfortunate 4-5 losses that ruined any hopes of promotion, Bourne turned on the style in Boston.
First pair Keith Wallace and Alex Yung pulled through against Boston’s first pair 6-3, 7-6, while second pair David Kelby and Tom Cooke raced through their opening rubber 6-1, 6-3.
Bourne completed a clean sweep of the opening round of matches as third pair Tim Bradley and Martin Slater ground out a 7-5, 6-4 win before building on that with a 6-2, 6-2 dismissal of their next opponents.
The on-court aggression of Keith and Alex proved too much for Boston, securing crushing 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-1 wins to maintain their perfect record.
David and Tom claimed Bourne’s seventh rubber with a 6-3, 6-2 win as Tom impressively handled the step-up from the juniors.
Boston’s first pair proved an obstacle too far, however, as David and Tom fell 6-7, 1-6 before Tim and Martin followed them in a 2-6, 2-6 loss.
The 7-2 victory to close out the summer season left Bourne 2 in fourth, but only the finest of margins away from second and with great prospects ahead.
