Promoted! Oakham Tennis Club's ladies, back, from left, Michelle Greening, Catherine Drury, front, Carolyn Davies and Gill Hole

Oakham Tennis Club’s ladies second team have been promoted to division four of the Leicestershire Winter League with a game still to play.

Sunday’s 5-3 victory against Leicester Forest ensured that they will finish win an unassailable second spot having scored 41 points from six matches.

Michelle Greening, Catherine Drury, Carolyn Davies and Gill Hole fought against wind, sun and opponents fighting desperately to avoid relegation on Sunday.

LFE is one of the largest clubs in the leagues with plenty of players to choose from unlike Oakham who have struggled at times to keep two teams going.

Michelle and Carolyn played resolutely against both pairs in rallies that were sometimes affected by the strong wind. They won both their rubbers as they battled against the conditions without a let-up.

Catherine and Jill were slow to start but worked well together to draw with the visitors’ 1st pair. They tried all they knew against the seconds but could not find the vital point to secure another set.

The Ladies’ first have completed their league matches in division two and are safely mid-table.

l Tennis continues throughout the winter at The Vale with mix-in sessions on Mondays and Thursdays.
