Valiant juniors preserve unbeaten start to season

Bourne A, the club’s junior tennis team, preserved their unbeaten start to the season in division 2 of the Peterborough & District Winter League with a 4-4 draw against a strong Deeping C side that included this year’s men’s singles champion.

James Meadows and Jack Mangieri showed Bourne’s mental strength in first grinding out a 5-4 first set win before recovering from a large deficit in the second set to post a 5-4, 3-6 draw and keep Bourne in touch.

Matt Hassall and Ed Nation, however, struggled in very windy conditions.

Deeping’s first pair were always going to prove tough opposition with men’s champion James Puttrell hitting winners from everywhere on court and the Bourne pair went down to a 3-6, 3-6 defeat.

Able to afford only one more lost set, James and Jack then turned in a brilliant performance to keep Puttrell quiet.

James served out the first set under immense pressure, having already passed up two set points before the second set narrowly escaped them.

That hard-fought 5-4, 4-5 draw kept Bourne in with a chance of a draw if Matt and Ed could claim their last two sets in similarly pressurised circumstances.

Matt saved two set points at 3-4 down before Deeping squandered another four in the final game as Bourne clinched a tense set.

Buoyed, Matt and Ed sped to a 5-1 lead in the second set before their levels dropped, the rubber finishing 5-4, 5-4 and earning Bourne a valuable point in the promotion race.
