Uppingham Town retained their Rutland Twenty20 crown in style at the Lime Kilns, defeating their hosts by 51 runs in Friday’s final.

Town batted first and were kept in check by Oakham’s bowlers early on but after a couple of lean overs Will Cropper (30) and Martin Bennett (26) began to ratchet up the run rate, making 48 for the first wicket.

Jamie Dumford added 25 and Mark Cox 21 with both dropped on the boundary - Cox’ shot went for a six - before an excellent throw from Shyam Lakhani led to Cox being run out.

The dropped catches proves costly as Uppingham pushed on to 92 in 13 overs before Cox’s innings was over. Max Collins added 23 and Alex Ashwin (14no) as the 2012 champions accelerated the score to a total of 152 for 5 off 20.

Albert Radfod with 2 for 29 was the pick of the five Oakham bowlers.

Oakham’s Joe Kendall (12) and Will Stuart-Jones (17) started brightly but after a brief flurry of six fours in the early overs Oakham struggled to match Uppingham’s run rate.

Ben Collins bowled an excellent four overs for 19 runs and at 10 overs Oakham were well off the pace at 55 for 3.

Mark Worthington and Chris Larsen were forced to hit out but after Worthington hoisted one huge six into a nearby garden, Uppingham’s well thought-out field positions ended Oakham’s hopes of a revival.

Worthington (27) was caught superbly by Cropper on the boundary off the bowling of Alex Ashwin (3 for 12) and Larsen (13) soon followed, caught by Danny Dumford off Ben Collins.

Radford (13no) and Matt Osman (9no) closed the Oakham innings on 101 runs and the trophy returnes to Castle Hill for another year.
