Wakes aim to topple leaders

ACTING Bourne boss Darren Munton is calling on his side to show the same commitment as they aim to topple league leaders Stotfold at the Abbey Lawn on Saturday.

Munton was delighted with how his charges responded in his first game as caretaker boss on Saturday in a 1-1 UCL Premier Division draw at Cogenhoe.

And he wants more of the same this weekend as Bourne aim to clip the in-form Eagles' wings.

The table-toppers have scored 22 goals without conceding in their last four games and currently have an eight-point advantage at the helm.

Munton said: "We know it's going to be difficult, but if we produce the same commitment as last week you never know what might happen.

"If the players show that sort of effort and commitment then I can't ask for any more than that."

Bourne's point at Cogenhoe on Saturday boosted their battle to beat the Premier Division drop.

A seventh minute Liam Palmer goal gave the Wakes the lead and they looked set for a win in Munton's first game back at the helm until Zac Nedimovic equalised 11 minutes from the end.

Palmer and Alex Harrison both had a couple of half-chances to score before Cogenhoe leveller while goalkeeper Aaron Bellairs had preserved Bourne's lead with two brilliant saves.

Youngster Alec Robinson also impressed Munton on his first-team debut after making the step up from the reserves.

Munton said: "We worked hard and defended really well, but if anything we probably scored too early.

"We were a bit unfortunate not to hold on as their equaliser was a scrappy goal, but I would probably have taken a point before the game.

"We did tire towards the end, but that was because of the amount of effort we had put in,

"Cogenhoe were very complimentary about the team which was encouraging to hear because it was a good performance.

"Aaron made some excellent saves while Alec came in and did really well. He stepped up from the reserves and looked like he had always been with us."

Defender Jason Gough is expected to return on Saturday after missing the Cogenhoe clash through illness while Ben Stainsby looked sharp on his comeback from injury.

Wakes: Bellairs, Walklin, Holland, Sparks, Ridout, Currall (Schiavi), Barrick, Staffieri, Palmer, Harrison (Stainsby), Robinson.

The Wakes have arranged a home friendly on Wednesday night when Conference North side Boston United - one of Munton's former clubs - visit the Abbey Lawn (7.30pm kick-off).
