Wakes boss strengthens squad

Bourne boss Darren Munton is signing up fresh recruits to help build on his side’s mid-table position, he revealed this week.

The Wakes have a number of midweek games in the pipeline, including a trip to Rothwell Corinthians next Tuesday, and Munton does not want player availability to become an issue.

Versatile Tom Walmsley, who has been a fringe player at Deeping Rangers, is coming in and could play on either wing or up front for Bourne while two more players have been signed up as cover for midweek games - goalkeeper John Feetham of Ryhall United and Oakham United centre back, Jamie Forbes.

The Wakes drew 1-1 away against Wellingborough Whitworth last Saturday and the Bourne boss was disappointed to come away with just a point.

He said: “I would probably have taken a point before the game. But we got our noses in front and then gave the ball away for their goal which was disappointing.

“In the main we defended well and I thought we had got past the stage of making mistakes.

“We could have won it. We had a couple of chances to win it at the death but a lack of composure cost us.”

Bourne took the lead shortly after the break when Aaron Jesson turned Lee Wood’s corner home.

But Cavell Jarvis levelled for Whitworth just past the hourmark, punishing the Wakes’ defence for over-elaborate play at the back.

“I was disappointed for the lads. They had worked hard to get in front,” added Munton. “But if we can get a point here and there away, and keep wining at home we will be ok.

Saturday’s match against Northampton Spencer at the Abbey Lawn on looks unlikely to go ahead due to the weather. Bourne’s next scheduled United Counties League fixture is at Rothwell Corinthians on Tuesday evening.

Bourne: Aaron Bellairs, Kev Elgar, Tom Cardall, Dan Smith, Aaron Jesson, Johnny Currall (Scott Spearink), Ben Easson (Mike Feely), Lee Wood (Jimmy McDonnell), Andy Moss, Craig Rook, Tom Caldicott.

Bourne Town Reserves did not have a fixture last weekend and are not due to play again until January 26 when they take on Burton Park Wanderers Reserves at the Abbey Lawn.
