A roller derby team, which is based at the new Borderville Sports centre in Stamford, are to hold an open day for the public.
The Borderland Brawlers invite you to learn about roller derby at the Borderville Sports Centre in Stamford on Saturday, November 8, from 1.30pm. On the day there will be a chance to meet some of the team, watch an exhibition game of skaters from around the country and ask any questions at the Q&A which will follow.
Borderland Brawlers Roller Derby, so named because they straddle many counties, are a co-ed team, established at the start of the year within Stamford, Rutland, Peterborough and surrounding areas. Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track.
Coach, skater and organiser Gair Booth said: “Roller derby, although relatively unknown in mainstream sport, is growing in popularity day by day in the UK. We often get asked ‘what is roller derby?’ People confuse it with roller hockey or roller discos.
“We're recruiting for new players in November, so we thought we'd put on an open day for people to come along and learn about the sport first hand.
“Ultimately we're hoping that people like what they see and will be inspired to come along to our recruitment night and have a go themselves. Next year is a big year for us as we will take part in the Roller Derby British Championships and if we're going to win we need more skaters”
Doors open at 1.30pm. Admission is free. Recruitment night will follow on Wednesday, November 12.
