A POLICE community support officer has taken a campaign to warn people about the dangers of distraction burglaries on to the small screen.
Officer Graeme Parrott is the star of a Lincolnshire Police short video which explains the dangers of doorstep crime along with giving helpful hints on how to avoid becoming a victim.
Mercury readers will be able to watch this video on our website at www.stamfordmercury.co.uk
The video comes after tricksters have targetted pensioners in Stamford, Bourne and the Deepings, with the most recently an attempted con in Tallington. A man posing as a South Kesteven District Council officer tried to get into a property in West Street on Thursday last week after showing a fake identification badge with the crest but no picture.
Fortunately the householder was not folled and did not let the man inside.
Officer Parrott hopes that video will help in the fight against conmen.
He said: "I hope that they take the message on board about crime reduction. With these crimes you never know when they are going to happen but as the video is on the website it can be viewed at any time."
The video was filmed on location in Heathcote Road, Bourne, along with the town's police station in West Street.
Officer Parrott said the video was a continuation of the Beware of the Bogeyman campaign which has been promoted by the neighbourhood watch team in daycare centres across Bourne.
He said: "We can see that by promoting the campaign and educating elderly people it has a knock-on effect on a lot of doorstep crime."
The district council has also issued a warning to elderly people to be on their guard after the Tallington incident.
A spokesman is advising people to ask for identification badges, which should have a name and clear photograph, and if residents are unsure not to invite them in.
The spokesman said: "If you are unsure whether they are legitimate, do not invite them into your home.
"Take a note of their name, close and lock the door and call us on 01476 406080 so we can verify their identity. If you feel threatened in any way by an unexpected caller, call the police."
