STAMFORD Shoestring Theatre’s summer production, Single Spies will open at Stamford Arts Centre on Tuesday. The Cambridge Five, Burgess, Maclean, Philby, Blunt and the mysterious Fifth Man were the famous spy ring recruited at Cambridge University in the 30s to pass on intelligence to the Soviets during the Second World War and the Cold War. Two members are brought vividly to life in typically witty and perceptive Bennett style, in this award-winning play. An Englishman Abroad concerns the real-life meeting in Moscow between actress Coral Browne and dissolute, alcoholic spy-inexile Guy Burgess. A Question of Attribution imagines a battle of wits between Anthony Blunt, Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures, and the Queen herself, where a discussion about a painting cloaks deep themes of deception and betrayal.
Times are 7.45pm each evening from Tuesday until Saturday, June 25. Tickets are £8 (£7) from 01780 763203.
