A group of Rutland musicians have had the rare privilege of performing at the Last Post - the traditional salute to the fallen warrior - at Menin Gate in Ypre.

The moving ceremony is held every night at 8pm to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who fell in defence of the town in World War 1.

At the extended ceremony on Sunday the Rutland Concert Band was given the opportunity to play two hymns - they chose Abide With Me and I Vow to Thee My Country.

Anne Mortimer, who owns Music and More, in Melton Road, Oakham, is chairman of the percussion, woodwind and brass Rutland Concert Band made up of 43 members aged between 12 and 78.

She said: “It was a great honour for us to be able to play, and pay our respects to the servicemen who lost their lives during the First World War.

“It was very moving and very humbling.”
