CLASSICS in Uppingham takes place in the town centre on Sunday and more than 70 classic cars are expected to roll into the county for the occasion.

The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Uppingham, Uppingham First and the Beeches Residents’ Association every few years to attract classic car owners and enthusiasts to the town and in return the committee arrange a number of entertainments to keep visitors amused.

Among them this year is an electric car and electric car charge point which will be demonstrated throughout the day.

The events will run from 10am to 4pm and the programme includes Rutland Concert Band at 11am, Uppingham School musicians at midday, Rutland Morris at 1pm, Leighfield Primary School performers at 2pm and the children’s art awards at 3pm.

A raffle with a first prize of £300 will be drawn in aid of the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

About 70 cars, and for the first time vintage motorcycles, are already registered to take part in the day and this year for the first time the Uppingham School quad will be open to participants, providing extra parking.

Already booked in among the guests is Top Gear’s The Stig, who will be there to pose for photos.

There will be a big red bus taking children for rides along High Street East, which will be closed throughout the duration of the event.

Rutland Telecom will provide temporary free high speed wi-fi in the town on the day and will be streaming live video footage on the Uppingham First website at Clues for a Golden Ticket competition will also be posted onto the website the night before with shopping vouchers up for grabs if the tickets can be found in various hiding places around the town.
