Aim to boost Uppingham trade with The Big Shop

A business group set up to promote market towns is organising a day of shopping to give Uppingham’s retailers a summer boost.

The town’s Women in the High Street initiative will host The Big Shop on Thursday, July 2.

The idea is to show off the work of retailers and other businesses, both to Uppingham residents and tourists.

Sandra Pollock, who is leading the Women in the High Street initiative, hopes the day will become an annual event.

“We are looking for opportunities to support market towns and high streets,” she said. “The idea is to create something that not only will support women-owned and managed businesses, but also to highlight the unique resources available in Uppingham in particular.”

The Big Shop day will be divided into various slots. Businesses that wish to take part can suggest a workshop, activity or special offer that will take place at a specific time. On the day people will be able to pick up a programme to see what is on offer.

Shoppers could also be rewarded for spending money in the town through a cashback competition. Participating retailers will ask people to leave their contact details on the back of their receipts.

At the end of the day receipts will be picked in a public draw, and the lucky winners will have their purchases refunded, to a maximum combined total of £500.

There will even be childcare facilities so parents can look around at their leisure.

Sandra said: “People coming into the town can decide what they want to see and to hear.

“There are all sorts of things planned.”

Women in the High Street will promote The Big Shop in Rutland and further afield in the hope that it attracts people from across the region.

Sandra said: “We are looking to promote it as far and wide as possible. We have had a lot of interest so far. Everyone we have spoken to wants to get involved.

“It’s really exciting. We hope it goes really well so it can become an annual thing.”

A full programme of activities will be published in June. To get involved in The Big Shop, call Sandra on 01162 893899.
