AN antiques fair attracted more than 1,000 people to Uppingham yesterday.

The event, which was organised by Uppingham Town Partnership, was based on the French antiques markets and there were 26 stalls in total selling a range of items and collectables.

Visitors filled Market Place and High Street East as they hunted out bargains and individual pieces.

Town partnership chairman and Rutland County Councillor Marc Oxley (Con) said: “I have never seen Uppingham so busy on a Sunday. It was wonderful.

“There were a lot of people from out of town who were peering into shops so I hope it will prompt a return visit.

“The objective was to attract more people to Uppingham and it seems to have worked.”

Coun Oxley said that if more shops had been open then he was sure they would have benefited from the swarms of people who descended on the town.

He added: “We’ve already had a lot of positive feedback from stall holders and shoppers.

“All of the stall holders were taking money so they had a successful day. We were short of a few but I think they were put off by the weather.

“We were very lucky though and the bad weather held off.”
