The search is on for the 2015 Stamford Poet Laureate and this year in addition to the annual competition Stamford Arts Centre is also holding a Junior Poetry Competition.

The competition which has been held annually since 2012, is looking to find a local poet to hold the honorary title of Poet Laureate for one year.

Throughout the year the Poet Laureate will work with Stamford Arts Centre and within the community to identify opportunities to make poetry part of the life of the town.

To enter applicants must be aged 18 years old and above and must type their poem along with a short plan on what they would do with their year as Poet Laureate. Handwritten entries will not be accepted.

Applications can be sent via e-mail to k.burrows@southkesteven.gov.uk or can be sent by post to the Stamford Arts Centre, 27 St Mary’s Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, PE9 2DL, marked Poet Laureate Competition 2015.

The closing date is March 31 and the Poet Laureate final will be held on April 29, where short listed entrants will be asked to read and perform their poems in front of a live audience.

In addition to the 2015 Stamford Poet Laureate Competition the Stamford Arts Centre is also holding a Junior Poetry Competition, with the theme “Where I Live”.

Entries are welcome in three categories: under 9s, under 13s and 13-17 years.

The award winning poet, Wendy Cope will be judging the entries and will award prizes from Walker’s Bookshop and Stamford Arts Centre. Winners will also have their poems published in the Stamford Mercury. Prizes will be presented by Wendy before her performance at Stamford Arts Centre on April 26.

The Arts Centre also hosts a monthly open mic poetry night at the cellar bar on the last Wednesday of every month at 8pm.
